Question: As-salamo-alay-kum I am settled in Canada and have my house with some mortgage payment still remaining to be paid. On the other hand I have investment in India. When I calculate Zakat on investment in India can I subtract the money I have in mortgage as it is my liability. Also I have been paying Zakat regularly on gold items that my wife has for personal use. According to some scholars Zakat is not to be on jewelry for personal use. I appreciate if you can review both questions and reply at your earliest convenience.Jazakallah Khair.Shahab ShaikhCanada Ph: 1-647-720-3478
Answer:

You can deduct the monthly payments (for the year in review) before calculating the amount of Zakah. However, you are not allowed to deduct the entire mortgage. If we do so, then no one would be  paying zakah as most people have mortgages  for homes or businesses. So, you are allowed only If the jewelry is for personal use you don't need to pay Zakah on it unless it is considered as excessive or extravagant.   For details, please refer to the following answer.
